Time for a challenge!

I’m always thinking of ways I can raise funds for Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch research which is my passion and the reason I am now living here on the beautiful Isle of Man. So, I have decided to take on the challenge of walking 1000 miles in a year! Starting from my birthday on 9th March 2018, I will head out on a hike whenever I can and clock up those 1000 miles over the next 365 days.

I’ve always enjoyed walking and I think this will be a great way to encourage myself to get out and explore my new island home and improve my fitness. I’m hoping that our wonderful, generous supporters will think 1000 miles is enough of a challenge to spare a pound or two towards the important research work that Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch carries out every year.

My rules for the challenge:

  • Only proper ‘boots on’ walking counts… I won’t be including a stroll to the pub!
  • I can’t walk the same route twice – unless where sections overlap on different walks
  • I will track each walk and post an update of my progress
  • Whenever a walk takes me to the coast I will keep a look out for cetaceans!

I was going to aim for a fundraising target of £1000 for 1000 miles, but I reckon I can do better than that, so how about £2 for every mile walked… what do you say?
Can you help me raise £2000 to support our important research work?

Whenever I can, I will update you in advance of a walk so anyone who would like to can join me. Or if the weather looks favourable I might combine a walk with a land-based survey, so you can join me for some cetacean spotting!

Well, this challenge didn't really go as I'd hoped. Unfortunately I just found it too difficult to find the time to do my paid work and fulfil my commitments to MWDW as well as fitting in multiple walks a week. I guess this kind of challenge is for someone with a...

Walk 1 – Peel Hill

My first walk took place on the day I launched the challenge, my birthday! It was a beautiful sunny day and though I only had time for a short walk it was a lovely way to start. I took a short loop starting in my hometown of Peel, heading a little way along the river...

Happy Birthday to me!

Happy Birthday to me!

So here goes, the challenge begins! The sun is out and the sea is calm so I best get my boots on and get out there, with my binoculars of course! I think I will start in my beautiful home town of Peel... I'll keep you updated. I hope I'm not the only one with the song...
